iCloud backup

I don't get this iCloud backup business. I have OS8.3. None of the published instructions seem to fit my iPad 4. I may have opted originally for automatic backup, can't remember. Now though this is what happens: Settings: iCloud: First screen: iCloud Drive: On. Storage: 4.6 GB Available.. : Manage Storage: Backups: My iPad 293 MB.: Latest Backup: date. Backup size: 293 MB. Next Backup size 294 MB. Show all apps. The only option available is: Delete Backup. There is no option to Backup Now. or to change to Manual Backup or anything else. Where did I go wrong? What do I do now? Help. Thank you.
