Why does Quicktime cut short my ipad screen recording?

I am a teacher using Quicktime to record my ipad screen as I write and explain some teaching concepts. I do a movie recording and can see my ipad on the screen and I use my imac's microphone for sound. I have successfully created a few videos but recently, videos I make are being cut short. I'll record a 5 minute video and I can see the timer counting up and the imac is showing my ipad screen and it looks like it's recording audio. But when I stop the recording, the resulting video will only be 20-30 seconds long, only recording the very beginning.

Anyone know what's going on? My imac has plenty of free hard drive space.

Thanks everyone.
