Save a video from Quicktime to an external hard drive?

I created a video on Quicktime and now I'd like to save it on to my external hard drive. I thought it would be just as simple as dragging to video over to the icon of the external hard drive, but once I do that it will not save and shows a sign that it will not save there. How can I save my videos???

How is the EHD formatted, if it's Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then it should work fine. If you use this EHD to share with a Windows box it may be formatted for the Windows Box, OS X can read it but not write to it natively. Please advise how it's formatted.

If the drive is formatted for the Mac, the it may be a permissions issue which is easily addressed.

This is the first Mac that I've ever owned and the first time that I've used Quciktime. Can you explain what you are asking me? I don't know in what format the video is. I did some screen recording for work and now I need to save them to my Toshiba hard drive. When I go into File/Move to and click to move it the external hard drive it says that "I can't save the file because the volume "Macintosh HD" is read only. Try saving the file to another volume." I don't know what that means either.

The issue is not the video, the issue is the format of your external HD (EHD). To check what it is, locate it in Finder right click it (or Command + I) and look at the format type. It will something like:

User uploaded file

If it is for showing Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then tell us what the format is.
