Q: How do I set up Apple Pay if I have a Watch and an iPhone 5s?

I have heard that I can use Apple Pay with an iPhone 5s, if I have an Apple Watch. But how am I supposed to add a credit card in a setup like this?

 

Obviously I can't add the card from the watch itself, since it has no keyboard. But I also can't add the card from the phone, since 5s phones don't "know" about Apple Pay. So how am I supposed to add the card I want to use?

    When you update your iPhone 5s  to iOS 8.2 you'll get an Apple Watch App, when you Pair an Apple watch to the iPhone you should get an option in the Passbook App to add a credit Card for Apple Pay.

    Once the Watch is Paired to the iPhone, you can use it to Pay using the card that was added to Passbook.

    Okay. So if I do this - pair the phone with the watch as you describe - do I have to have the phone with me when I pay?

     

    Apple's page regarding Apple Pay says that you don't have to have the phone with you. Does this apply even if the phone is a 5s?

    I cannot find anywhere it says that.  In fact, this is unlikely to be the case, since the Transaction occurs through an NFC chip in the iPhone 6 and 6+. without the iPhone, there's no transaction.  The Apple Watch takes the place of the NFC chip for earlier iPhone models, so you may not need to take out the Phone, because it can't really do anything, but it should still need to be near the Watch to transfer the payment data to it, so it can transfer it to the contactless terminals..

     

    With that said, best to wait for the Watch to be available, and I'm sure a User Guide will be published by Apple soon, that will answer all those questions.

    ...says, and I quote, "You don't even need to have your iPhone with you." It says this right under the "An easier way to pay" headline.

    Ahh, missed that part.

     

    It would seem then that once paired, then iPhone 5, 5s, and 5c are no longer necessary to pay.

     

    You can then just walk around with the Watch and make payments.

    I have an iPhone 5s/8.3 and a new Apple Watch.  They are paired.

     

    There is no option in my iPhone Passbook app to add a credit card ... just to add a Pass.


    In the Apple Watch app on the iPhone, I select "My Watch" / "Passbook & Apple Pay".  I tap "Add a Credit or Debit Card".  From then on I just get the "waiting twirl", followed by a dialog box:  "Could Not Connect to Apple Watch - Mae sure your Apple Watch is nearby, powered on, and not in Airplane mode".


    The iPhone/Watch are paired.  They are right next to each other.  They are both powered on.  They are not in Airplane mode.


    What next?!??

    Even though you're using an iPhone 5S, you set-up the credit card desired to pay with THE WATCH, in the "Watch" App on the 5S.

     

    The transactions do not use your actual credit card number, but a code representing your CC, which IS stored on the Watch, so your credentials remain safe.

    Thus are you able to pay with the Watch alone, no 5S present(once CC is verified).

     

    On the 5S you cannot set-up a CC to pay with Apple Pay by iPhone 5S swipe; you can only set-up a CC to pay via Watch swipe.

     

    This is a decent stop-gap for those of us with the Watch but an older phone.
