I can't get passed the old Apple ID

A little over a month ago I found an Ipod 5 at my school and so I brought it to the office. Just today they returned it to me because no one claimed it. It is reset back to factory settings but I can't do anything because of the original owners Apple ID... Because of Apples way of showing you Ipod details.. I can only see the first letter of the email... So I have no way to even try and contact the original owner to ask to remove the Id.. or even return it. I need help please..
