My iPod won't turn on?

I received my iPod 5 as a gift about 2.5 years ago, bought and shipped from the States because I live in Japan. My iPod has just randomly shut off before and wouldn't turn on but I would use my home and power button to reboot. However, three days ago my home button just suddenly stopped working. I can't even press the home button anymore or anything and today my iPod just randomly shut off out of nowhere. I've hooked it up to iTunes but my device doesn't appear. What can I do to fix this? Do I need a new iPod? And I tried using this reboot software that someone suggested on another Apple Support thread but the file for Windows computer has been removed.

You could be having battery issues or something inside may have broken.

YOu could take it to your local apple store and have them take a look at it.. THen go from there. They can give you an idea if it's fixable or if your money would be better spent getting a new device

I don't know. We don't have any Apple Stores on our base and I don't think we have any off base. Also, my battery was at full life. I've never had battery issues before. 😟 I don't know what to do.

I've had random issues with mine but usually a reboot helps it. Holding down the sleep and home keys until you see the silver apple.

But when my screen has messed up I'll also get a response when I plug it into the computer, which you say you're not getting. if it were responding I'd suggest a restore but I'm not sure if that'll work when the device isn't responding.

Yeah I don't know. I've used home and power buttons before to reboot and get that silver apple but I can't use my home button anymore. If I were to take it in to this one place out in town that fixes all devices and they replaced the home button, maybe it'll turn back on?

Maybe. I'd say that a non-authorized place will void the warranty, however if it's over 2 years old you don't have one left anyway

I think comes down to how much money to toss at it and when it's better to cut your losses

True. So if it came down to buying a new iPod, would I lose all my photos and all my apps and notes when I go to set up a new iPod? I have a lot of important notes on my iPod (believe it or not) and photos I had yet been able to transfer after traveling to Thailand.

You should be able to save anything you backed up. If it wasn't backed up, either to a computer or iCloud then it may be lost.

If you get a new device, as you set it up you'll have the choice to set up as new or restore from a backup. If you backed up your old one, you can restore your new one from that backup and it'll be a near clone.

All right. I saw another thing about charging it for an hour too? I may just take it out in town and have them look at it later tonight. Thanks for the advice though!

See what you missed here:

- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on

- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

- Try another cable

- Try on another computer

- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
