Can't install flash player

I've had an iMac for several years and all was well until tonight I got a flash player demand to update and I can't seem to do it. I follow the flash instructions but it stopped at my name and password, I can't type any words. This is very frustrating, why do I need flashplayer anyway. I have Maverick.
