Q: Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

      Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

         com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily(1.4)[70E2B65E-A91A-3522-A1A0-79FD63EABB4C]@0xfffff f7f82ecb000->0xffffff7f82ed3fff

Not sure if this helps but “com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily” is mentioned most of the times.

8 GB RAM here - same panics and crashes. Just been to Munich Apple Store. Genius Bar guy checks hardware - no problem. Advises me to downgrade to 10.10.2 again and wait for an update - which only God or Apple knows will come ..

I hope for an Intel HD 4000 update cause the actual MacBook Pro 13" non-retina is still sold with a Intel 4000.

MBP 13" mid 2012 non-retina (still available at Apple Store) with Intel HD 4000.

    Little status update:

Disabling the transparency helped to work around the crashes for 6 days now with the latest 10.10.4 public beta on my Mac mini (Your mileage may vary). At least that's improvement after the 1-3 day cycles. Though I'm still waiting for the fix to turn back to "normal transparency".

I also have the impression that mostly people with 16GB RAM installed are affected.

I Have a late 2012 Mac Mini with 16 GB RAM, same GPU. I haven't had any issues.  Perhaps they got a bad batch of GPU's. When that happened on the Mid 2010 MBP, normal diagnostics couldn't detect the faulty GPU.

I run Apple Hardware Test (pushing "d" on startup) and no issue found and I went to Genius Bar as well and they tested all my hardware: all was OK!!!

Yeah, this could still be a possibility ... but: If it would be a hardware fault, it would have shown on different occasions for most of us - or at least: It would also occur on other OS (like Windows on BootCamp), but since all of us noticed the problem only on the 10.10.3 update (and still pre-10.10.4), I think it's most likely a hiccup due to some subsystem changes. Maybe it simply doesn't occur on certain hardware/peripheral combinations, monitor models etc...

    I updated to Mac OS X 10.10.4,

On my Mac mini 2012 w/ 16GB RAM and dual monitors-- now the boot screen is now Black with a White Apple Logo-- is this normal? are other 2012 mac mini owners experiencing the same black boot screen with white apple logo?

while on my MacBook Pro 15.4" Mid 2012 non retina-- the boot screen is still white with a grey apple logo

And on my Mac mini 2012-- I still got the graphics glitch flickering bar appearing on my second monitor but after i draw a box on the bar it goes away,

I did a SMC reset and a PRAM reset hoping it is just old settings in the PRAM and SMC that will clear out.

About concerning the graphic glitch flickering bar, do you still have that after installing Yosemite 10.10.4 as well?

Yup, same here - Apple updated some firmwares with 10.10.4 which brings the new black/white boot to the 2012 Mac mini.

I've had it until the last Public Beta of 10.10.4 ... but since I've only had the final 10.10.4 for 2 hours now, I really can't say if it's gone now. Time will show.

Yes, I still get the graphic glitch flickering bar after the Mac OS X 10.10.4 update.

i just reset the SMC and PRAM hoping it was caused by old settings from 10.10.4 and that it will clear out after the reset.
