Q: Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

      Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

Not sure if this helps but “com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily” is mentioned most of the times.

I am so happy to see that I am not crazy and others experience the same problem. But only a small fraction of Intel 4000 HD Macs are affected, I guess. Otherwise this thread would probably be more crowded  i also had all sorts of funky GPU switching issues on my previous Macs.

Can anyone register as a developper?

Well then, there's a good test case to consider. What are you doing when it happens?

Nothing fancy. If you want to look at the video I posted: the video flicker appeared while browsing Wikipedia. What else was running? Mail, I guess. The DropBox menu-bar thingy. Nothing else.

As well the last restart must have happened under similar circumstances. Because if I had lost work in a design app I certainly would remember

My MacBook was at the Berlin Apple Store for 2 days, they didn't find anything wrong with the hardware. I did a hardware test myself before and am pretty sure the memory is OK. Now after reading about the loose HD cable I consider opening my MacBook and check for that too.

Does anyone know of a way to reliably reproduce the kernel panic?

Apple wants to keep my Mac for five days and do some tests, but I am almost convinced that this will not help.

    Hi Everyone,

I've been watching this thread for a while now, and I still am suffering since the 10.10.3 OS X update and continue to crash in the 10.10.4 updated.

My situation is a bit different, and maybe I need to follow a different thread.

My MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) does experience some video glitches only when connected to an external monitor through mini display adapter. The MBP (mid 2010) does not crash however and runs all my video editing software and Adobe Suite with stability.

My problem is with my desktop workstation - Mac Pro Late 2013 - 8-Core Xeon E5, Dual AMD FirePro D700, Maxed out RAM.

My Mac Pro crashes consistently when I try to open a few specific software applications: iTunes, Chrome, Photoshop, or Flash Player. The issue seems to be with a graphics driver or graphics software glitch. I get GPURestart Kernel panics often when opening those programs and when I do crash it seems to be a video card issue. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the software as well as taken days worth of other troubleshooting steps.

I can't roll back to 10.10.2 for some reason. I tried to do it from a backup and the machine wouldn't reboot - just kept hanging on the Apple logo screen. I restored back to 10.10.4 and it works - but crashes.

I can however work for long periods of time (up to a week) without a crash using Adobe Suite (except for Photoshop) if I don't open any of the above listed applications.

Everything was working smoothly up through 10.10.2 and only started on the 10.10.3 update. I've updated to 10.10.4 and no help.

if anyone can suggest a topic closer to what I'm experiencing I would appreciate any insight.

    Thanks.

I was having all the same problems, after trying everything, I installed the beta version of El Captain and I'm so far apparently free of these errors.

As well the last restart must have happened under similar circumstances. Because if I had lost work in a design app I certainly would remember

Your console log doesn't seem to indicate it has restarted. Your kernel panic log will be date/time stamped. Look in console around that time. You should see a BOOT_TIME entry after the kernel panic time.

The log messages just prior to that would be the ones that have anything useful in them.

What do you mean by flickering? I have come to understand some people describe the effect of the menu bar crashing and restarting as "flickering." Finder crashing and relaunching is similar. Crappy status menu extras will cause that behavior.

Flickering graphics artifacts would be something different.

The Mid 2010 15" MBP had a known bad lot of Nvidia GPUs. If you do not live in the US, you may be able to still get that repaired under a recall that Apple ran for three years from date of purchase. Since many countries have effectively doubled any offered warranty period, you might be able to still get it repaired if that is the problem. It requires a $360 logic board replacement. You would have to specifically ask them to perform a Video Switching Test (VST) to detect the faulty card. No other test will find a problem.

If you haven't already, I would start a new thread and ask for specific help with this problem.

    Thanks for the response!

Yup, looks like I might need to install the beta version of El Capitan this week as it seems to be the best option currently.

    Thanks for the info Barney-15E.

I do remember that recall, and I think my MacBook Pro was out of the serial number range. I'll check again though to make sure but as of now it runs so stable that I don't really need to do anything with it as it's also an aging machine.

I'll try to install El Capitan on my Mac Pro and see if that helps -

    Thanks again.

    OK. My bad.

That’s all I have anyway. That log is gone by now

Grrr. Why didn’t Apple ask for that? It is still there I add it at the bottom.

Please check the video in my public DropBox folder I posted a few posts back.

EDIT: Again, I want to make clear that I experience the restarts about monthly the flicker even more rarely.

Unfortunately, not much to go on there. It is a Page Fault, which could be memory related.

If they had it for that long, I would hope they checked the RAM thoroughly.

You can try testing it with Rember, but the only absolute test is a failure. If it passes, that doesn't necessarily mean it is good. You normally cannot test all of the RAM, so parts of it can go untested.

Well, thanks for looking at it anyway.

Does that tool do anything Apples hardware test doesn’t? I ran the long version

It is supposedly better. I don't know anything more than what others have said. It uses a well-known unix memory check routine called member. Run it a couple of times.

There is definitely something wrong with the graphics. I wouldn't know how to tell (if you even can) whether that would be software or hardware.

If you only get the kernel panics infrequently, next time you notice, try to remember if you had just connected or disconnected any devices, woke from sleep, or something different that you don't normally do day-to-day.

Unfortunately there is no pattern. The panic appears randomly. I can use the Mac to do heavy simulations, fill all RAM, whatever and it will work for months. Then all of the sudden while browsing some websites or doing something else that is totally normal it will crash (twice). In the beginning there was rhis theory that LittleSnitch might be causing the issue but there also many users here that do not use it. Then there was the theory that it is MenuBar related, but this did not quite hold either. And it is impossible to convince Apple employees that this is real. They prefer to replace your Logic Bord over and over. It is so frustrating.

I didn't use 10.10.3 AFAIK; machine would occasionally reboot inexplicably but not all that frequently.  Wasn't often enough to figure out what was causing it, although I suspect(ed) overheating.  When I upgraded to 10.10.4, my machine started rebooting multiple times a day

Didn't see this (10.10.3) thread until after I'd started my own thread:

Re: mid-2010 MacBook Pro reboots after 10.4.4 upgrade

Within a month I had two cold restarts or sudden system crashes after I updated to 10.10.3 and two more under several 10.10.4 public betas. It was not possible to find out the cause - every time I did something different and also the kernel panic logs were different. I researched a lot about it and found many threads about bugged graphic card drivers. But I do not know.

I decided to downgrade to 10.9.5 Mavericks. No more cold restarts and everything is running very stable since then.

It definitely was related to 10.10.3 / 10.10.4. I have a MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2012), 2,9 GHz, 16 GB Ram, 512 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD, Intel HD 4000.

I have a test drive on an external hd of Mac OS X 10.10.5 latest public beta - feels very stable and no system crashes, but I cannot test it extensively.

Has anyone more experiences with 10.10.5 Public Beta already?

    Thanks!
