Q: Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

      Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

         com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily(1.4)[70E2B65E-A91A-3522-A1A0-79FD63EABB4C]@0xfffff f7f82ecb000->0xffffff7f82ed3fff

Not sure if this helps but “com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily” is mentioned most of the times.

Hi, I started having the flickering but it wasn't often. I guess it started after 10.10.3.

I just made a clean install of El Capitan and its worst.

    Here's some videos about it:

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwMAm9Yd_DcFS0NIMC05NlZPSFk/view?usp=sharing

    I have a:

    MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2012

    Apple 4GB of RAM

I just recently disabled transparency and so far it is working ok. If the problem reappears, I'll try downgrading to 10.10.2

I upgraded to El Capitan last weekend, and all I can say is that I feel like I have a whole new computer. I'm assuming that the upgrade kept the Transparency Off setting, but everything is running much, much better and fast. No panics... yet.

For some reason Apple stops updating MacBook Pro and Mac mini (with Intel HD 4000) to Later OS X than 10.10.2

Probably is the only stable version.

Yes, that was the most current shipping OS when they stopped selling that Mini.

The Macbook Pro is still being sold, with El Capitan installed.

Oddly, there's not a Mac on that list that has El Capitan installed. Makes you kinda go, "hmmmmmm."

well as I originally said before, the OS X  update hasn't fixed the problem nor did any other update/upgrade previous. Because the problem is a common problem throughout all mac's that require a screen. I note to all mac users use a different screen where possible all my other monitors don't have this problem the only one that does is the original screen that came with the device, I know run the apple thunder bolt 27" cinema display on a pc running an ASUS thunderbolt card works perfect every time.

The problem is between the connection to the screen and the thunderbolt connector take the board out and you will see what I mean flip it over sometimes there is no solder some times there is apple don't acknowledge this fault as a void in warranty.

Get the ASUS thunderbolt card and you will see what I mean. I have an earlier version of this card in mine and have been running it since 2013.

The mac mini mid 2011 came with the thunderbolt 27" cinema display and never work properly with the mac then I bought the mac mini late 2012 still no different, so in late 2012 about December I built a pc to take the ASUS thunderbolt card and well you know the rest.

Anyway just a small note: I did not write this reply to be in your face or to be in apples face, I love apple products, Hmm haha.

Yes, MacMini late 2012 with Intel HD4000 here. Cannot find a relation between graphics and restarts, though. Graphics have been pretty stable, the whole systems looks like it's more solid than Yosemite, but sh*t sometimes happened.

Logic: could be some incompatibilities they're being still worked on, many sw instruments and plugin producers have advised to not update to OS X 10.11, so it may be my "fault" here.

Time machine: at the end of a 500mb backup, about at the "Cleaning..." phase, I believe, it had the panic. Subsequent backup took longer at the "Preparing..." phase (probably checking and repairing some corruption).

However, it could really be anything. I also suspect some Parallels 10 service, the few panics I had happened after I started Parallels on El Capitan for the first time. The virtual machine I use sometimes hangs (beach balling) while it's open, but doesn't crash or freeze, usually it's a 30 seconds hang. That couldn't be good, anyway.

I am a developer and I had chance to test El Capitan long enough to say that it's sold system I hadn't any restarts, only the flickering issue,

I suggest you "AppleRyck" to have a clean install and by the way my machine is like yours mini late 2012.
