Q: Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Cold restarts after 10.10.3 update.

Hi,

Ever since the 10.10.3 update I am experiencing two problems on my mac mini. I am not entirely sure that they are related to the update but since I haven’t changed anything (hardware or software) on my mac, I can only assume that the update probably triggered the issues.

The first problem is that every now and then I get a bunch of pixels flickering on some random position of my screen. Another user reported the exact same error and posted a video here: https://www.facebook.com/georgetasioulis/videos/10203713632115564/ Once I drag a window over these pixels, the problem is gone.

The second and more major problem is that I get random cold restarts. It could be 5 minutes since I booted my mac or even a day after. There is no specific app that I’m running when the mac restarts. In other words I can’t seem to find a pattern on when this happens.

After reading many forum posts I ended up doing a clean installation of Yosemite and started installing everything from scratch. After a while the same thing happened. I noticed that some “power users” can make sense of the kernel panic logs so here is my latest one:

I would really appreciate if someone could point me to the right direction in order to figure out what to do next. My spec is a mac mini (late 2012) 2.3GHz i7 with 16GB RAM from Crucial and a Corsair SSD Force 3 240GB. It is connected to an Apple Thunderbolt display with only one peripheral: a Logitech Anywhere MX mouse.

One last thing… the above kernel crash log is kinda rare. Most of them have this:

      Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

         com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily(1.4)[70E2B65E-A91A-3522-A1A0-79FD63EABB4C]@0xfffff f7f82ecb000->0xffffff7f82ed3fff

         com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform(3.1)[97299A71-6EDD-3AD9-AE1D-2F7B61E8AA72]@0 xffffff7f8458b000->0xffffff7f845e9fff

Not sure if this helps but “com.apple.iokit.IOACPIFamily” is mentioned most of the times.

    MrCamaleo,

I'm the person who have downgraded the OSX to 10.10.2.

I was tired with so many problems and lockups with 10.10.3, and they were affecting my work too.

I agree with you.. a complex combination could be a reason of so much trouble... maybe a compilation like a spreadsheet can help us to ask Apple (internally or public way) to help us with this problems that initiate with 10.10.3.

It's very annoying to hear by phone from a guy from Apple support this is a hardware problem, even with people complaining of identical problems in a number of equipments.

Could I ask for all to post here a complete description of equipment and software like mine, bellow?

Could you build the spreadsheet with this data?

    Equipment: MacBook Pro Mid 2012

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB

    Retina: No

    Memory: 16Gb

    SSD: 240Gb Corsair

    Little Snitch: YES

    Logitech: NO

    Blinking bars: YES

    MrCamaleo,

    I use this site:

    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-i5-2.5- 13-mid-2012-unibody-usb3-specs.html

It's very accurate with Apple's products data.

    About memory, they say:

"*Apple officially supports a maximum of 8 GB of RAM, but third-parties have determined that this model actually is capable of using up to 16 GB of RAM with two 8 GB memory modules."

    Mine has 16Gb, too.

    Best Regards.

Anybody with flickering issues has Chrome Remote Desktop installed?

The Remote Desktop Host software installs something like a graphics driver to the system, so I thought it may be related.

While I was experiencing flickering on a daily basis (multiple times per day), since I've removed Chrome Remote Desktop (extension + host software), the flickering is gone for 2-3 days now.

Here's one more Mac mini 2012-user ... same flickering and kernel panic crashing since 10.10.3 ... glad to see I'm not alone.

I've already tried quite a lot:

    - Reinstalled the combo update

    - Deleted Little Snitch

    - Updated everything possible

    - Switched RAM modules (turned out one of my Corsair RAM was faulty) - still no change after the hardware downgrade (Hardware test says "OK again").

Definitely seems to be a massive driver problem with 10.10.3 - had a downgrade to 10.10.2 for a few days: Rock solid. But this can't be the solution. Hoping for a fix soon.

I reseted the SMC and the PRAM and the kernel panics associated with the MacOSX 10.10.3 update went away but the flickering bar still happens but randomly.

So i recommend you all reset the SMC and PRAM and see if your kernel panics go away because it did for me.
