Your computer needs to restart - greyed out screen Help!

I am using a Mac pro 2.1, quad core Intel xeon 3ghz computer, running Mac OSX Lion 10.7.5.

I keep getting a greyed out screen [ comes down like a black curtain] that tells me the computer needs to restart. on restart it lets out a high pitch noise. it repeats this once or twice on each restart, usually after two or three attempts it works again but only for a little while. I have rebooted using an external start-up disc and I have the same thing happen. The crash report is here below…. Can anyone advise what to do?…...

That looks like an uncorrectable RAM Memory Error.

Uncorrected error

The Mac Pro with Xeon processor uses Error Correcting Code memory to ensure data accuracy. It stores eight extra syndrome check bits with each word in memory, and when read back, single-bit errors are corrected in Hardware with essentially no slowdown. These errors are noted by background software, and tabulated for later reporting.

Most Double-bit errors are not correctable, and halt the machine with exactly the sort of kernel panic you are seeing (to avoid poisoning your data).

Correctable errors are sometimes noted in the logs. But they can be observed easily by using this STATIC report:

Go about your usual work, and invoke this report from time-to-time. DIMMs that are showing correctable errors are Bad, and will soon cause an uncorrectable error and halt the machine.

Remember that the report must be refreshed or invoked again to obtain updated data.

An even simpler method is to remove half the DIMMs and run with just those. If they are good, the problems are in the removed set. Then swap those back in and keep dividing the sets in half to fairly quickly converge on the DIMM pair that is causing the problem.

DIMMs that have a Vendor's sticker are often covered by a lifetime replacement warranty.

Try with just the 2 x 4GB placed in A1:2

Then try a 2 x 2GB

Memtest can be run in Terminal letting you run dozens of tests concurrently, in small chunks, for 5 loops. Just keep opening Memtest in the terminal, and test say 400MB over and do same in a new terminal window. It is hard to test ECC with Memtest though someone mentioned it has been updated to help improve testing.

Monitor the temps, that is usually the first indication of FB-DIMM being an issue.

Good news has been that those have been inexpensive on Amazon and also you can find FB-DIMMs that run cool enough to work in Mac Pro 2006-2008 - even without the "apple approved" RAM heat sink.
