why does Album Artwork have to be deleted every time the files on my iPod and iPad are updated while connected to PC?

I import a lot of my own music on to my iPad and iPod. I manually add album artwork from Google or Amazon. When finished, iPod and iPad artwork is there. When I plug devices back into PC or Macbook, devices update thru iTunes and all album artwork that I manually put on, is deleted. Any suggestions?
