Hard Drive recovery

I Just spoke to apple via chat who told me to use UBUNTU LIVE CD to recover files from my External Hard Drive (WD Elements) as it has stopped working, we did all the disk utility stuff and basically figured out that it is truly messed up and needs to be erased in order start again. unfortunately it is not mounted so i can't recover my files and they recommended Ubuntu live CD to recover my files but i have no idea how to use it or even where to begin about installing it. Help would be much appreciated!

Just find it odd that "apple" would make those recommendations.

Buy a new drive or two is in order.

A better backup plan.

Too often bus powered drives fail. Drives that are basically built into the external case means you can't take it out to move to a different case.

Always have two or three sets of your data: main live data, a copy/backup, and TimeMachine.
