My Mac Air is not recognizing my external hard drive. when I open finder, the external hard drive doesnt appear so I cant access it. Yet it does appear in disk utility...

Yes. It recognized it before, but not anymore.
I didn't repair it.
I've opened Disk Utility and upon verifying the external hard drive, it tells me I need to repair it.
I clicked repair, and then an Error messaged appeared: Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
But how do I access my files, if the external hard drive doesn't appear on finder or desktop???
Have you checked Finder Preferences?
