I have checked my iMac, using DiskWarrior App from an earlier disk, and the result is that 25% of 'items are out of order'. I know that the DW that I have doesn't work on Yosemite and am loth to pay out for a replacement; can I optimise without DW or an expensive alternative?

There's hardly any need to defragment the drive unless your down to only about 5 GBs of free space. Is that be the case you would be better off replacing the drive with a larger one and keep the old one for a backup.
