I Am considering cutting the cable cord with the new Apple TV on the horizon. I have a 3rd generation Apple TV. But there is an obvious reduction in resolution when watching programs streamed on HBO or Hulu Plus or anything else through the Apple TV as compared to recordings through Comcast ON DEMAND. I've checked my settings and they are correct. Anyone else??

YYes, well I did a speed test....download at 40, upload at 22, ping at 20. DNS set to auto. The Apple TV is connected to my AirPort Extreme via Ethernet cable and HDMI to my AVR.
Ok, then it should be fine. Is the picture pixelated or how would you describe? How does it look when streamed on another device (ie computer)?
SSimply not as clear, like comparing 780p to 1080p, only not quite that extreme. Facial features, edges of buildings.......just not as sharp. This was noted also on Hulu Plus while watching the Daily Show. PleAshe don't tell me it is because of the "liberal media".
Ok, now I have a better idea. That will be more a matter of the encoding/compression used with the service. Have you tried anything through iTunes?
No, but then again, why would that matter. I mean, I bought the Apple TV thinking that with its apps I could watch things from it, enjoying the simplicity of an entire Apple home. Is the next software update with the new TV and Beats/iradio going to help? Otherwise we're all still stuck with cable
I asked because iTunes content is of higher quality and also fixed rate. This isn't something specific to Apple TV but rather down to the services.
YYes, but I can't watch Game of Thrones though iTunes. My concern is that now we will have HBO NOW as an ap to watch everything HBO. So the question reverts back to why are these Apple Apps of lower quality than iTunes?? I mean, it is Apple, right
They aren't Apple apps, they are simply a provider available on Apple TV. This, along with the others, are available on other platforms and the service would remain the same.
WWell, resolution is my curiosity. In the end, unless something changes, I know that watching a program that has been recorded on cable or view a series available through On Demand with Comcast, it is a much better viewing experience than watching through the Apple TV. I don't want this to be the case, my entire home is Apple. One would think that anything available on or through Apple TV, including streaming music, would be of the highest quality making the decision of where to watch or listen a no brainer.
Itunes content is of the highest quality, Apple has no control over the others. In order to stream instantly those others take some compromises with compression and also use adaptive streaming. The device used to view wouldn't be relevant. If you're unhappy with the quality then you'd be best to complain to the providers
WWell, I do appreciate your effort. I just don't see why Netflix through my Apple TV is of poorer quality than Netflix when warched through my Oppo BluRay player. The Oppo definitely is processing the exact same show in a better way. Thanks
Netflix looks exactly the same on all my devices, including Apple TV.
