Q: Hurray! 8%.

Is it me.. or is this a major issue with this new "upgrade" to photos. Surely apple wanted to create a more stable photo program. It's stable alright! Stable at 8% completed!

Does anybody have a fix for this - or will Apple figure out this mess and send out an update?

Not to mention that when the TC fails (and all drive will) they have no backup of their photos

I apologize for the delayed response... However, I needed to purchase an additional hard drive.. not only as a backup to my backup... but to be able to transfer my large library to a properly formatted HD. I've read online that some people use the exFAT format in the event they wish to use a PC and MAC. Will this be an issue for iPhoto? Would there be any future instance where this is risky? Again, I was using MS DOSfat32 on my initial HD.

The other questions is... should I wait to transfer my iPhoto library to the new photos program? Surely the new photos program is more stable than iPhoto.

Thanks for that advice, I'll definitely look into a second drive.   Right now though the drive is showing 2TB free space and 1 TB used.  So I have plenty of space at this time.  My iPhoto library I am trying to convert to Photos is 533 GB and has about 41,000 photos in it.  So, I expect it to take a while but the last time I tried converting it I let it run for 36 hours and it just stayed stuck at about 8% complete.   I can still access the iPhoto library just fine with the iPhoto application and have reverted back to that for now until I can find some solution.

I you have iPhoto 9.6.1 or can download it from then App Store I suggest you do the following before converting the library to Photos.

1 - launch iPhoto with the Option+Command keys held down and run the following First Aid routines:

         a. Option #1, Repair Library Permissions

         b. Option #2, Rebuild Thumbnails

         c. Option #4, Rebuild Database

This will "clean" up the library to help insure a good conversion.  It might take a while to do those three routines but a clean conversion will make things go much better later on.

I did all these steps and then tried the conversion to Photos again and it became non-responsive again at 11%.  I let it sit at 11% for 24 hours to see if it made any change. Nothing.   Your tips did however help iPhoto run a bit quicker.

    D. I've read online that some people use the exFAT format in the event they wish to use a PC and MAC. Will this be an issue for iPhoto? Would there be any future instance where this is risky?

Yes, absolutely.  iPhoto can't exist on such a formatted volume and Photos checks the volume for correct formatting and won't even go there.

You must have a volume formatted OS X Extended (journaled) in order to use iPhoto or Photos.

Photos is lacking many of the features of iPhoto so unless you have a pressing need to migrate to Photos I'd stay with iPhoto.  You can create a test library with Photos and experiment with it to learn it's pluses and minuses.

Here are two user tips that should be of help to you:

Old Toad... Have you heard of any solution to the large library conversion issues?   Sticking with iPhoto for now and have transferred all my photos to Google Photos without issue.  Any info would be appreciated.

All I can suggest is to run the First Aid procedures on an iPhoto library prior to migrating it to a Photos library.  You know the old saying:  garbage in - garbage out and if there are any problems however minor with an iPhoto library they could affect the successful migration.
