Upgrade Mac mini from 10.6.8 - how recent can I go?

I have OS X 10.6.8 (snow leopard) and want to install Garmin express map updates, which requires 10.7; should I order the disc or try for yosemite; guess I need 2 GB internal RAM and 8 GB external (flash?); true?

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.8), got it around 2010

1. Try for Yosemite.

2. The computer should have at least 4GB of RAM and 8GB free on the internal drive before upgrading. An external drive isn't directly required, but the computer should be backed up to one so that data doesn't get lost in the event a problem occurs.
