Q: 8.3 update breaks Bluetooth on iPhone

If you know a permanent fix, it would be appreciated.

 

My iPhone is now running version 8.3 iOS on the AT&T network.  It is an iPhone model 5s.

 

The car is a 2015 BMW LiX running version TN-002.049.003 phone software, with MN-002.049.003 media software.

 

Behavior:  Pair the phone with the car using Bluetooth.  Place a call.  During the call (particularly where signal strength gets low), the phone and car will unpair without losing the call.  I have to complete or terminate the call using the phone.   This is occurring regularly, and is reproducible.  It is happening in locations and during calls to parties that used to work without incident a few weeks ago, and worked since November (when I got the car).

 

After the pairing drop, nothing I do short of rebooting the phone will get them to pair again.

 

Fix: I need to power down the phone and restart it.  It will then connect again with the car (sometimes) — sometimes I have to unpair the phone/car and pair them  again.

 

This is extremely annoying.  Any idea how to get this complaint into Apple?

    Hi spaf,

     

    It appears you are experiencing issues using your iPhone in the car via Bluetooth. I've located some support articles which may help you find a solution:

     

    iOS: Troubleshooting Bluetooth connections - Apple Support

     

    Follow these steps first:

     

    1. Check that you are in range of the Bluetooth accessory with which you are trying to pair your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Most Bluetooth accessories have a range of approximately 30 feet.
    2. On your iOS device, tap Settings > Bluetooth and find your device in the list. If your device says Not Connected, tap the name of your accessory to attempt to connect it.
    3. Tap Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth off and then on again.
    4. Make sure that your Bluetooth accessory is turned on and fully charged or connected to power.
    5. Make sure that your Bluetooth accessory is in pairing mode.1
    6. Restart your iOS device.
    7. Tap Settings > Bluetooth and locate the Bluetooth accessory you are currently connected to or attempting to connect to. Then tap   and "Forget this Device". Try to pair your Bluetooth accessory again.
      • You may need to enter your Bluetooth accessory PIN again if your accessory requires one. Some common PINs are 0000, 1111, and 1234.
    8. Restart your Bluetooth accessory by turning it off and then on again1.
    9. Update your device to the latest version of software. See how to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
    10. If your Bluetooth accessory has upgradable firmware, check to see that you have the latest version1, 2.

    Those are all basic steps I have tried several times.   Heck. most of them are issues with establishing initial connectivity and that is NOT my problem.

     

    I've had the phone paired with the car since November and used it frequently.  It is only doing dropping the pairing since the iOS upgrade.
