Q: How to get Windows 8.1 on Mid 2010 MBP?

I have been looking and looking for a way to take the physical CD that comes with the windows software and download windows 8.1 to my 13-Inch, Mid 2010 MBP through BootCamp. Is there another way or a different way to load windows 8.1 onto my computer?

I am running OS X Yosemite, Version 10.10.3

Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Startup Disk: Macintosh HD

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce320M 256 MB

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Real quick, when I reboot, do I open the Windows portion or the Mac?

Boot to OSX. Verify that you can see all partitions.

Can you post the output of

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

Insert your W8.1 DVD. Power cycle you Mac and hold Alt Key. Choose Windows (not EFI Boot) and start the installer. Pick the partition that was just created, nothing else, otherwise you will cause problems for OS X.

The orientation seems to be stuck sideways on this picture, but this is where I am:

I Seem to be stuck on this screen? The underscore at the end is blinking still at this point however the DVD doesn't sound like its spinning. Thoughts? I held the power button to turn off, then started it back up and held the alt key, selected the windows disk and this pooped up. I clicked a random key and it's still sitting.

Disconnect all peripherals, except Keyboard and Mouse. Is there any other external storage connected?

Use BCA and select only the Download Software option, and download it to a USB2 flash drive, which will be erased, formatted and written. Leave this plugged in and test.

I had a wireless mouse attached, unplugged and went through process again. Appears to be working fine now.

Ah, there are no BT drivers installed yet, and there is no WindowsPE environment.

Which type of installation do I want?

Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files, settings, and applications

(The files, settings, and applications are moved to Windows with this option. This option is only available when a supported version of Windows is already running on the computer.)

    Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)

(The files, settings, and applications aren't moved to Windows with this option. If you want to make changes to partitions and drivers, start the computer using the installation disc. We recommend backing up your files before you continue.)

I'm assuming I go with the "Custom"

Custom and after you choose the BC partition, you will see a set of screens similar to https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/mac/5.0/help/#/bcmp173b3bf2.

You have to click on Format and let the Installer convert it to NTFS and then click Next. Make sure you have the Windows partition selected, do not wipe any other partition.

It finished installing and the OS X side opened up? Do I need to restart the computer and open the Windows side, I'm presuming.

Tried that, keeps pressing me through to OS X side. Thoughts?
