I am using the trial of finalcutpro for a school project, but I can't upload my video to youtube because it does not recognize the file type. When I try to upload from finalcut, nothing happens. There isn't a clear cut "save" feature. Any help?

It's not a direct answer to your question but many people find it easier to create a master file in the appropriate format and upload that manually to YouTube instead of using FCP X's automatic upload . . . which I couldn't get to work.
Just to add to Ian's advice, if you Share>Master File, choose Web Hosting for format and H.264 for your codec. Save to your Desktop and use the YT uploader. That should give you a file that makes the YT encoder happy.
