Can I use a SATA 3 drive in a SATA 2 port?

I have a mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro, made to run SATA 2 drives. I want to look at replacing my HD with an SSD, but I can't seem to find any that run SATA 2, only SATA 3.

Is this okay to do? Everywhere i've looked it seems to be the case that it's backwards compatible so that this would be okay to do, but I wanted to double check first with a direct answer.

Cheers!

I used a SATA III in a 2009 Mac Mini (SATA II) and got 3 gb/sec negotiated speed. However, some users only got 1.5 gb/sec.

I used a SATA III in a 2009 Mac Pro desktop (SATA II) and got 3 gb/sec negotiated speed.

BTW, this is the Mac Pro Desktop forum
