Apple Maps and Google maps 'cannot reach server' on 3G. Works after turning off an on

Every time I try to search for directions using both Apple Maps and Google Maps, when it is on 3G, the search hangs. On Google maps it sometimes comes up with 'cannot reach server'.

If I turn the phone off and back on it works. It works fine when it is on a wireless network. The mobile network still seems to work for browsing, emails etc.

I have tried doing a DFU restore as instructed here

which went fine.

This is on the EE network (formerly T-mobile) in the UK.
