iPhone 5 can't connect

My iphone 5 can't can't be recognized by my laptop (windows 8.1). When connected it doesn't even charge. I have re-installed my iTunes on the laptop more than once but it doesn't connect. But when i plug the USB into an adapter it charges the phone. What could be the problem & how can one solve it?
