T-Mobile vs. T-Mobile WiFi in Carrier String

Hi all,

We're working on supporting wifi calling on iPhone (T-Mobile) in a large enterprise environment with internet access via satellite. In general it's working quite well, but over the course of troubleshooting issues we've noticed that sometimes a phone will simply say "T-Mobile", and other times it'll say "T-Mobile Wifi" for the carrier string at the top of the phone. We're far from any "real" t-mobile cell service, so we know with 100% certainty that even when the phone says "T-Mobile" it has to be getting that across the wifi, and not over a cellular network.

Our question is, why do the phones sometimes say "T-Mobile" and other times say "T-Mobile Wifi"? Is this an indicator of certain features or functions being available? Generally, we seem to be able to make and receive phone calls regardless of the carrier string but it doesn't always work and we're not sure if the carrier strings might be giving us some relevant information.

Thanks,

Brian
