Q: iCloud Photo Library Upload - Extremely Slow Uploads

Hi all,

My iCloud Photo Library uploads from the Photos app is extremely slow.  I have about a 6 mbps upload connection but cloudd (the process that is uploading the photos) barely uses more than 200Kbps .. sometimes barely 10Kbps.

Has anyone seen this issue?  Have tried combinations/permutations of repairing library, turning iCloud Photo Library off/on, signing out of iCloud etc ...

At this rate, it is going to take me years to upload 45K photos.

Thanks for any suggestions

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Its not you, many are seeing slow iCloud uploads of their Photos library. I have a small 3K pic library that has been taking days to upload and when I do have the upload running its been severely impacting the performance of my internet. I've been pausing it during the day and letting it run overnight.

I'd guess that Apple is doing throttling and are getting hammered by millions of people running photo uploads right now, or a likely combination of both. You might want to leave your upload paused for a week or two and then try again after things settle down. Looks like my upload is going to complete today so fingers crossed.

Tell me 2 things: the total size of your library and the actual upload speed. Test your upload speed here and post the result. Then I can tell you the minimum time possible.

It looks like my ISP is throttling my uploads.  Uploading through LTE shared connection sped the uploads dramatically.  Will contact my ISP or pause for a day before continuing.

If you are seeing extreme slowness, this is probably the reason why.

I am having the same problem. I have a library of approximately 16000 photos. Since the launch of Yosemite 10.3 with the new photos app I have increased my storage in iCloud.  In the last six days I have managed to upload only 450 photos.  At this rate it will take months to complete.  I have test my download speed at 14.19 Mbps and my upload speed at 1.06Mbps.

That would be quite good if you were downloading, but you're not downloading so it is not relevant. 1.06Mb/s is the speed that matters, and it is very low.

At that speed it will take 2 hours 35 minutes per Gigabyte uploaded, that's the best case.

I have an iPhone 6, a mini and a laptop and its taking the slow boat to China to upload.  All my photos are on my IMAC 14,000.  This is ridiculous!  This might take weeks. Is there any way of speeding it up?  I have spoken to APPLE care 3 times regarding the uploads.  No one told me it might take a week!

I guess the most one have the same problem. (I´ve an download rate of 14,88 Mbps and a real slow upload rate of 800 kbps, but the slow upload rates are quite normal in Germany). I knew it will take long and I´ve uploaded about 7.500 pix the last time. But since the last days and nights there is no upload any more. Photo says that it´s uploading 13.460 pix, but nothing happens. The counter is at that number for about 5 days now. Restarting router, TimeCapsule and iMac didn´t help, neither pausing and restarting upload.

What has worked for me is restarting the router and restarting Photos periodically.  Once a day.

To see if you are making progress on the photos upload in more granular detail, I monitor the files that cloudd is accessing:

lsof -c cloudd | grep filecache

I run this in a loop:

while [ 1 ]; do losf -c cloudd | grep file cache; date; sleep 5; done

If I see the same file being touched for a long time, it may be a matter of just pausing/resuming, bringing Photos app to the foreground, restarting router etc ..

Running above will also show you if you are uploading videos which will take a long time depending on your connection

I confirmed that my ISP was not throttling but there does seem to be some sort of issue between my ISP and Amazon S3 where the photos are being stored.  Restarting my router periodically helped push the uploads.

I´m quite sure you´re inserting this command in the terminal, do you? (I´ve no real experiences with the mac terminal, the easy to use feeling was one reason for me to change from windows to mac). But when I´m typing this command in the terminal I´m receiving no answer.  Any further help for me?

Edit: When I´m using your loop-command I´m receiving the answer "no such file or command".

I had this problem but found a solution which worked for me. I started the upload and then switch to the photos app on my iPhone 6 having switched off auto lock. The phone just sat there for 10 mins and all my photos were uploaded. You can see if they are being uploaded by looking at the little glittery symbol next to your wifi signal strength indicator. If the glittery circle appears then your photos are uploading. Hope this is clear and helps!

I do not have the problem with my iPhone but with my iMac. The iPhone is uploading correctly, the iMac hangs at the same number of rest files for several days I tried to deactivate the photo stream on all devices (iMac, iPhone, 2 x iPad) but it doesn´t work either. I´m hoping for the next OS-update.
