If I have OS X Lion can I just upgrade to Maverick or do I HAVE to upgrade to Yosemite? I'm scare because of all the bad reviews I've read about Yosemite.

If you're willing to pay for Mountain Lion, you can upgrade to it.
Mavericks is no longer available, unless you downloaded the full installer for it before Yosemite came out.

Back up your data and try installing Yosemite onto a different partition or drive. If it doesn't work out, you can easily revert and go to Mountain Lion.
