Yosemite slow opening and cannot open itunes

Recently I upgraded the OS X to version 10.10.3 plus some supplemental update, and my itunes to version 12.1.12. To be more precise I installed the update on April 10th.

During the past week I have not used itunes, but when I tried to open that yesterday I failed. The icon does not even bounce, and no window comes out as usual. I did restart the machine, and I also followed some instruction online but none of them helped solve the problem.

Moreover, I discovered that after each update the speed of open my Mac pro becomes slower and slower. Now when I turn it on, usually the white apple icon appears instantly when I press the Power button, but now I have to wait for half a minutes with the black screen for the icon to come out.

So I am not sure if the update has problems. But now my main concern is how to make my itunes work??

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try to launch iTunes. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Hi Linc,

Thanks a lot for your reply. Here is the information from console. I myself do not see much useful information there: actually when I try to open itunes, there is no immediate message, instead I have to wait for a few seconds to see new message comes out. The following are two typical information that has keywords itunes, which I made them bold so that you can easily spot them.

Thanks for your help! I am looking forward to your reply.

According to multiple reports on this site, Apple Support has given the following instructions to others who had a similar problem. I can't confirm that this procedure works or that it's necessary, but it won't leave you any worse off than you are now.

First, back up all data.

Select the iTunes icon in the Applications folder and open the Info window. Click the padlock icon in the lower right corner to unlock the settings.

In the Sharing & Permissions section, change the Privilege setting for each Name in the list to Read & Write. Close the window. If the settings aren't visible, click the disclosure triangle on the left so that it points down.

You should now be able to drag the iTunes application to the Trash and empty. Your iTunes data won't be affected.

Click the iTunes link at the top of this page, download the installer package and run it.

If iTunes still doesn't launch, or if you can't complete the procedure, reinstall the OS.

Hi Linc,

Thanks again for your explanation and help.

As I did yesterday, it turns out I could not download the iTunes. The download window appeared with the package name "iTunes-12.1.12.dmg" but after I start downloading no progress is shown, and the package has a weired name like "GQLxC42t.dmg.part".

I think I will try another browser. If not I will see if reinstall OS would work.

I wish the support team could solve this problem soon, or start a new update for the OS and iTunes.

Hi Linc,

Thanks a lot!

I used google Chrome instead of firefox to download that, and it is successful. After reinstall the iTunes, everything went back perfectly.

So for those of you who has the same problem, please follow Linc Davis's instruction above. When you have problem downloading the iTunes, try another browser (Google Chrome, for instance).

Hello Linc.

You wrote that my iTunes data won't be affected. I have add many music from my external hard drive before upgrading iTunes to 12.1.12 and Yosemite to 10.10.3 and I sort it and manage with artworks and so on. Does it mean that if I delete iTunes and reinstall it it will be there my music after reinstalling?

Thanks a lot for your answer.
