I just opened iPhoto (I haven't upgraded to Photos yet, so that's not the issue), and several years worth of my photos (though not quite all of them) have been overwritten by my wife's photos. She just did a major system upgrade, so I suspect that was the root cause. What happened? Is there any way to recover my photos?
We do photo-sharing via iCloud.

Did you and your wife use the same library? Is so were was it located? Do you and your wife have separate user accounts on the iMac?
She does not use the iMac at all (so she has no separate account on it).
She has a photo library on her MacBook, and it appears that I now have all of those photos. She does not appear to have any of my photos there.
I think I have lost all the photos I had ever taken on my iPhone, except for some that (for various reasons at different times) I had saved back to its Camera Roll.

I just went to "Switch to Library..." and I apparently have several of them (identically named; I've never deliberately created a new library, so I don't know where these come from. One the appears to have all the lost photos, though I still don't know how/why.
