3gs not connecting to itunes

I have a 3GS which is no longer used as a phone. I would like to get all of the photos off of it and upload to my computer and add music to it to use like an iPod.

When I connect it to my computer (Windows 7) it does go into charge mode but iTunes does not open and when I go to My Computer to try to get the pictures the iPhone is not showing. It seems like the computer and iTunes is not recognizing it.

I have updated the phone to the most recent software.

Any ideas how I can get it to connect so I can get my pictures and add music?
