iCloud and instagram

In the last few weeks I've turned on iCloud Photo Library and love much about it. Especially given my 70,000 pics in my library.

But what I don't like it is that it's made my instagram (and pretty much any other photo app) largely unusable. The app will work fine just looking at others pictures, but if I try to make a new instagram the app freezes as it appears it's trying to access all 70,000 pics in my library. If there was a camera roll (it appear iCloud Photo Library deletes your camera roll) or an album of recent pics maybe this wouldn't occur (however I could probably never select it, because its frozen). But instead it searches through all my photos and just freezes. Any ideas?
