Q: Large iPhoto Library conversion to Photos for OS X seems stalled?

I have a large iPhoto library I am trying to open for the first time in Photos.  This library holds about 46,000 photos.  This iPhoto library is stored on my Time Capsule drive due to size.  It has worked just fine in iPhoto for a couple years. I used the Option on opening Photos to select the library last night and selected Open per the instructions I have seen.  It started processing and appears to have run all night (about 12 hours now) and is sitting at 10% complete and has been sitting there since I looked at it first thing this morning.  How can I tell if it is still Photos is still processing?   Does anyone know what timeframe one should expect for a library creation of this size?  Should I force quit and try again or just let it process?  Not a big Mac expert so would appreciate any help.

When I look in Activity Monitor I see the Photo Library Migration Utility running as seen here.

You have not told is how big your library is, or what your upload speed is, would you like a guess based on no information?

    Size of Library =?

Upload speed =? (this depends on how the drive is connected) 480Mb/s maximum if it is USB2

    Time needed to upload =?

Thanks for responding.  The library I have is 533 GB.  The Time Capsule drive is hard wired to my monitored via cable and my MacBook pro is connected to my display via a Thunderbolt cable connection.  WiFi is disabled.   The Time Capsule has 2TB of free space.   The last time I tried to initialize the Photos library from my iPhoto library I let it run for 36 hours and it got to 8% and then never moved past that.  I did force quit the process and I am able to access the iPhoto library just fine using iPhoto.   Appreciate any ideas.

FYI, Ethernet cable connection from monitor to Time Capsule drive, not USB.

Please answer my question regarding your upload speed, what is it.

When uploading photos in iPhoto I can see via Activity Monitor that my Data Sent / Sec is between 7MB and 12 MB.

I have a similar problem.  My iPhoto library is on a remote NAS.  When I try and convert my iPhoto library, the same way you are, it gets stuck at 11%.  I let it run for 24 hours and still stuck at 11%.  It only takes about an hour to get to 11% so seems like something is wrong.

To date I have not found a solution.  If I do I will update.  Folks are trying to help though.  I am trying these items from another thread this weekend.  The first one seems to  have helped a bit.  I will update if I find something that works.

Here are the  items I am trying (from Old Toad on this post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7001536)

I you have iPhoto 9.6.1 or can download it from then App Store I suggest you do the following before converting the library to Photos.

1 - launch iPhoto with the Option+Command keys held down and run the following First Aid routines:

         a. Option #1, Repair Library Permissions

         b. Option #2, Rebuild Thumbnails

         c. Option #4, Rebuild Database

This will "clean" up the library to help insure a good conversion.  It might take a while to do those three routines but a clean conversion will make things go much better later on.

Tried all the steps above and same result...stuck at 11%.

I completed the same and my conversion also will not progress beyond 11%.  I have let it run at 11% for 24 hours and no movement.

I have pretty much the same situation. Stuck at 11% for hours. Activity monitor highlights the Photo Library Migration Utility in red; yet Alt-Cmd-Esc doesn't say it is not responding. Activity monitor says it is consuming 1.2-2.6% of CPU. Yes, it changes. So, it doesn't appear to be *hung*, just hung.

My 83GB old iPhoto library lives on a Time Machine accessible via 145Mbps wireless 802.11 2.4GHz network.

It only took at hour or two to get to 11% and then it appeared to hang. I am trying to be patient, but after a few hours, I must cancel the operation and take the laptop to work.

Would really appreciate some advice on how to enable this migration to complete.

left the laptop at home, and 7 hours later, made it to 12%.

This is rubbish. I cancelled it, and killed the process.

I'm pretty sure it's because the MacBook Air connects to the Time Machine via a non-Apple wireless router. Anything non-Apple just causes the Time Machine to fail, Fail, FAIL. I hate being locked in.  After what, 10, 20, 30 years? I've really had enough. This stuff should just *work*. And it doesn't. It's just as bad as the Windows and Linux crap we migrated way from. Why do we continue to be jerked around like this, paying exorbitant fees for stuff that actually doesn't work the way we thought it should? I so wish I could go Luddite.

Do you have a technical question that the users here can assist with - or do you just like to troll public forums and post insane RANTs?

    Note a few things

My 83GB old iPhoto library lives on a Time Machine accessible via 145Mbps wireless 802.11 2.4GHz network.

There is no such think as a TimeMachine - TimeMachine is a software program - you might mean a TimeCapsule which is a hardware device that includes a Disk

your iPhoto  (or Photos) library must not be on a wireless connection - it is very slow and unreliable and often causes corruption of the library

If You have a Time Capsule directly connected to your Mac and if you are not using the TC as a TimeMachine backup drive then the iPhoto or pHotos library can be on it

So basically your entire insane RANT most likely is caused by personal user error on your part

apologies for the rant. You are correct, it's a Time Capsule. The Time Capsule is used for both the Time Machine backup, and to store extra goodies like an archived 83GB iPhoto library and we stream videos from it, too. It's not great, but it works most of the time.

I have also tried to use the iPhoto utilities like repair permissions, thumbnails, rebuild database, etc. They just hang.

Are you suggesting a direct Ethernet connect to the Time Capsule will solve the issue by removing the wireless connectivity? I can try that. Just have to collect a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter. Hopefully, that'll work.
