no airplay icon

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011 that does not have an airplay icon on the top tool bar. According to the specs, this is something that I should have. I am running on OS X 10.9.5. I have two Apple TV's and an iPad 2, and an iPhone 4. From what I understand, everything but the iPhone 4 should be able to be paired up to the MacBook for airplay/mirroring but when I go to display settings it says that no devices are found. I've looked through all the troubleshooting but have found nothing to fix my problem. What am i missing?
