iOS upgrade 4 replacement phone

Hi y'all! I am getting a "new" replacement 4s & im not sure what OS I should upgrade it to. My previous 4s worked beautifully until I updated it to 8.3 when it went dark & never restarted despite following all of the apple suggestions. So Im quite leery (sp?) about updating again to 8.3 or even 8.0 after I have read other issues with that update as well. My question is what OS version has been the "most" stable for at least the iphone 4s? I don't have the phone until tomorrow so im not even sure what OS version is installed on it.

Any thoughts or suggestion are appreciated..

You will not have a choice of which version you upgrade to. If it isn't already running iOS 8, any upgrade will take you to the most recent compatible version, in this case 8.3.

I suspect you'll be limited in what version you can install. Apple doesn't typically keep older iOS versions available for updating.

well I guess im asking if it comes with say 8.0 I don't need to upgrade to 8.3 do I? I would prefer to wait awhile since the last upgrade killed my phone 🙂

There is no law that says you must update it. However, there is a serious security flaw that is corrected in 8.3 You would be wise to upgrade.

kilted tim - thanks for your reply! as you might imagine im just a bit gun shy to do another 8.3 upgrade after this past experience plus all the other problems I keep reading about on these boards. but if it breaks the phone again, I guess ill just end up with a 3rd phone 🙂

You won't read anything other than problems on these boards - that's what they are for. Apple have not supplied forums for the tens of millions of users who do not suffer these problems.

tonefox yeah I understand that im only going to see problems on these types of boards. I get that but I too had the issue with the upgrade so now im worried about going for it again. what do you think the chances are that it will effect another phone. probably less than 1% but when your part of that 1% it makes a big impact.

One thing to keep in mind, if your previous phone was running 8.3, you will not be able to restore a backup of that phone to the new one unless the new one is running 8.3 or higher.

1% is very much a stab in the dark. It may well be more like .01% if that. I have never seen an iPhone 4s 'killed' by the update. I have however seen a faulty iPhone 4s die with an iOS7 install. Deduction? If an iPhone is ready to die from hardware failure, then any update merely pushes it over the edge. The sane with PCs.
