Mavericks 10.9.5 and Java
DO I need JAVA? If so, what version is the most up to date and runs efficiently without glitches on Mavericks 10.9.5? I don't see that I have "any Java" on my laptop.

No. You do not need Java unless you use software written in Java.
Thanks -
Actually how would I know if I use software written in Java ? Would it ask me to load or update Java? Reason I ask my husband's puter just asked him to update Java (he runs windows) and we generally go to the same sites etc. Curious...
The software would fail to run and send up an error telling you that it needs Java.
There is a difference between Java - a programming language - and JavaScript - a scripting language. Some applications use the latter for operating a GUI's gadgets. There's no reason why you would need Java unless you were trying to run Java applets used on some web sites.
Thanks again - I think I get it now! Simply, if I need and don't have it which both situations are unlikely - it just won't run and it will let me know - 😕
