My nano says to eject before disconnecting from the computer. What does this mean?

It means that the computer might be using it and hasn't prepared the device to be unplugged.

To disconnect your iPod from the computer, go to your itunes page, the to the controls menu item at the top of the page. Open Controls, and scroll down to "eject iPod." Click it. This will turn off your iPod so you can disconnect the USB cable safely.
There's also a little arrowhead with a line under right next to the name of the ipod. You can always just click the arrow.
