The safari alert warning of major security issues is blocking the access to internet

I Received the pop up safari alert warning of major security issues and asking to call the support for Apple toll free number. I can not get rid of the pop up and can't access internet

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

That message is usually a JavaScript-based scam, and just locks Safari to that dialog box. Following the steps Niel posted to to reset Safari is typical, though try adding a reboot.


if that fails and if you have plug-ins or add-ons or anti-malware or anti-virus tools installed, remove those per the vendors' instructions, and reboot.


It's also possible that whatever network you're on has a vulnerable router or some other sort of dreck operating; a compromised network. Is this your own local network, or one that's managed by somebody else? Determine if your router firmware current, and ensure that the default router credentials changed. If not, upgrade or secure that.
