Screen sharing not working in Messages (Mavericks)

I have been unable to screen share successfully the past few weeks via Messages on multiple computers. All are running Mavericks, as we haven't yet upgraded to Yosemite. The connection happens but then I can only hear the person on the other side; I can't actually see their screen, nor can they see mine when I've had the other person initial screensharing. I don't know if this issue is because we haven't upgraded, but I used to be able to screen share through Messages on Mavericks without any issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

In the Messages > Preferences > Accounts > Aim Account change the setting about relaying through AIM.

EDIT.

In the Video Menu open the connection Doctor when you try a connection

What does it say ?

In fact what do all the tabs show you ?

Hi,

Regarding the last picture go to Messages > Preferences > Video section and change the Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps at both ends.

This will make the colour go Amber in the Connection Doctor but it is still fast enough for 4 Way Video chats.

What it does do is smooth out some very fast connections where the percentage variance is greater than the speed needed in Video or Screen Sharing.

It also helps when one end is much faster than the other.

I notice it also says "Port Restricted"

Mine says this by I do use UPnP in my router to make sure the ports needed are open.

I have same problem here. Latest 10.9.5 with all updates seems to break Messages Screen sharing even if the computers are on the same wifi network.

I cannot see screen of OS X 10.9.5 system (only audio as the original poster), but 10.9.5 system can see 10.10.3 or 10.7.5 screens.

Firewall is off btw.

Only thing I can find in system.log is

Messages[270]: attribute = {

VCSupportARDAudioMux = 1;

shouldFindExternalIP = 1;

}

Hi,

The Log items are normal

ARD (Apple Remote Desktop) is used with an Audio Chat alongside.

The = 1 bit means it is On (0 would be Off or Not true)

The same for finding the external IP

It seems to be saying it can see it.

PSUPrincss:

There is a bug in the ARD 3.8 update for all OSX computers but Yosemite OSX.

You need to downgrade all the client computers to ARD 3.7 client.

The related thread pointed out by Palo Markovic explains the downgrade.

Then report the bug regarding ARD clients 3.8:

Thanks, everyone, for your help. I was able to go back to ARD 3.7 and was actually successful at talking my mom through doing the same. We were able to screenshare without any issues last night but now have the same issue again this morning. The same thing happened with my dad's - install went fine, one good connection, then the 2nd one failed and only had audio again.

Any other suggestions? Would upgrading to Yosemite solve the issue or have there been issues there as well?

The problem is that after downgrading of ARD Client the software update will list ARD 3.8.2 v.1.1 available again and if the Software Update / AppStore is setup to automatically update it will break again. Quick solution is to downgrade again, open Software Update, wait until ARD 3.8.2 v1.1 will appear in the list, right-click it and choose Hide this update. That should fix it, until next ARD update, which should correct the problem (if there will be any at all).

With Yosemite there's currently no problem with Messages Screen sharing.

Hi,

With Yosemite there's currently no problem with Messages Screen sharing.

No Issue with Yosemite to Yosemite.

It does have issues with computers with earlier version of the OS but the updated ARD.
