Yourr task is to 'digitize' a DVD - that can not be done with your set-up.
You'd need, if a DVDplayer is souce, an additonal 'box', a digitizer. Very few avail compatible with Mac/iMovie.
The easier way:
ripping a DVD
You need any cheap usb-connected DVD-drive; copy the disk to your Mac; use the free tool Handbrake to 'rip' it = convert it to be useful in iMovie.
Hint: that works only with DVDs without protection/DRM!
Ripping copy-protected disks violates laws in most countries.
