Region-based automation in Logic Pro 10.0.7?

I'm still using Mountain Lion, so I cannot update to 10.1 yet. My understanding is that it has a button to switch between Region-based automation and Track-based automation. A tutorial I saw said this existed before, but was hidden. I've done several searches on line, and cannot find it. Basically, I'm trying a simple Cutoff automation on the ESP, which is repeated every 4 bars. I know I can do it by track automation, but I thought it might be more efficient to automate the region, then copy it or loop it. I looked at Midi Draw, but it doesn't seem to offer Instrument-specific parameters. Am I overlooking something obvious?
