Thumbnail previews not showing for recent photo stream

Simply restarting Photos often cures this issue.

To rebuild the thumbnails launch Photos while holding down the Option + Command keys.

I am having this problem.

Restarting Photos does not work.

Rebuilding the Photos library also does not work.

To get missing thumbnails to show (where there is just a light gray box), I have to double-click the thumbnail to open the image, then double-click the image to close it. This causes the thumbnail to appear.

If the thumbnail is fuzzy or rotated incorrectly, I right-click the image, and then "rotate it clockwise" 4 times. This seems to fix it.

My problem is that I have about 65,000 images. I would say that about 1/2 of the thumbnails have problems.

Does anyone know of a quicker way to fix all the faulty thumbnails at once rather than the way described above (which would take me days)?

Well, it appears that Photos is "fixing" these photos by itself.

I have left Photos open all day (about 12 hours now), and now there are no more photos without thumbnails (that I could find anyway).

There are still LOTS of photos that have fuzzy or improperly rotated photos, but I wonder if Photos is correcting these as well. I think I will leave the program open for another 12-24 hours and see what happens.

I have just transferred to a new MacBook Retina and no thumbnails are showing EXCEPT for all events - but individual events, photo library and all albums are just slightly grey blanks. The blank spot when clicked opens the picture but with thousands of pictures this is terrible. I have tried the rebuilding and nothing changed. I hope leaving open for hours might solve things. Unfortunately I had an older version of iPhoto which didn't open in Yosemite so there isn't that second library to rely on.

I am having the same problem so would be curious to know whether it can indeed be cured by leaving Photos open for an extended period of time.

the easiest way to correct thumbnails is to select the problem ones and rotate 90 degrees then rotate back forcing a redraw of the thumbnail

Thank you, it does work and of course on can rotate hundreds of photos in one go. Would you know how to dea with the same issue for videos ?

only solution so far, rotate counterclockwise and then rotate back to original (clockwise)

could be a pain for larger sets of photos, i managed to rotate back and forth 1200 images in 5 minutes, macbook pro late 2009.. not bad eh?

Definitely a pain for larger collections. Tried doing 8000+ at once after a new hard drive install and restore, and things got in a mess - some rotated, others not, some showing, others not. Had to restore the library and start again. Not sure what the optimal number is. But rather annoyed at this problem, bring back iPhoto...

This work around made it for me:

Just go to the highest level of Photos browser (years).

Photos will start to make the thumbnails for every missing pic.

what helps me is to take the photo/s to the bin and then return it back to the previous location. Rotating doesn't help me.
