Audiobook controls are missing

After the most recent upgrade to version 12.1.2.27, any audio files that I have set to Audiobooks no longer have the the speed controls or the 30 second rewind or fast forward buttons.

The only way I can seem to get the 30 second buttons back is if I use the Remote app from my iPad to connect to iTunes running on the Mac, and press the Artwork box. I do this anyway because it makes it easier to stop, start and rewind something that I'm listening to and also taking notes on. I'd still like to know why these controls have disappeared from iTunes and how to get them back.

I'm currently running OSX Mavericks 10.9.5.
