MacKeeper

Do I need to install virus software and a cleaner such as Mackeeper? I'm relatively new to Mac's and have always heard that virus software isn't needed. Any other recommendations besides MacKeeper?

Do not install MacKeeper, it's of no use (you don't need anti-virus software) and is basically malware which will plague you with pop ups and is extremely difficult to get rid of. Avoid it as you would the plague (and ignore the MacKeeper employees who will doubtless pop up here telling you I'm wrong). There are no viruses in the wild affecting Macs. If you are concerned about passing on viruses in emails to Windows users (which is about the only risk) the free application ClamXav:

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/clamxav/id430207028?mt=12

Your main risk is from malware that you are duped into installing yourself. Don't download from dubious sources (in particular free illegal movies from torrents) and never follow links in unsolicited emails.

1. You don't need antivirus software unless you're running Windows on the computer or frequently exchange files with people running Windows, and don't need MacKeeper under any circumstances.

2. Don't bother downloading any non-Apple utility software unless you have a specific reason to use it; some of these are potentially useful.

I am running Windows, but only to utilize Quicken. I never go on the internet in Windows except to the Intuit website to download stock prices. I do have a virus software installed on the Windows side of the machine to protect me there. So I should be OK, right?

I am having a problem with Facebook not loading properly (no images) that I am trying to get corrected. I can't seem to find a solution.

I thought you were merely asking about installing MacKeeper. It wasn't apparent that you already installed it.

In case it's not already abundantly clear, you should avoid MacKeeper and anything resembling it. There are many other products similar to it, and they're all garbage.

Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 required more extensive work to uninstall all its components.

If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.

If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.

  • If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
  • Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
  • Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
  • Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.

You will be asked to authenticate (twice):

User uploaded file

You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:

User uploaded file

Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.

After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk.
