portrait selected shows landscape in design view but landscape in print view

In the document view I select it to be landscape, but it is in portrait. When I go to print view to print it, it is showing in landscape view, but prints in portrait. What is going on? I'm new to the Mac and am using a Macbook Pro retina.

Portrait and landscape in this context are not shapes they are orientations.

It simply dictates which edge is the leading edge in the printer.

If you are printing onto a wide sheet of paper the long edge is on the top.

If you are printing to a narrow sheet of paper the short edge is on the top.

You can flip the way it goes into the printer by choosing the alternate orientation which simply rotates the contents 90°.
