cannot connect a windows laptop

Earlier, with my previous laptop, I was able to connect a windows laptop to my 2009 Imac (from Display to mini display). I set my laptop screens to extend to a secondary screen, and pressing command F2 on my imac keayboard was working nice to switch between seeing my imac and my laptop on the imac screen. but my new laptop won't do this anymore. The only difference I know of is that I now have HDMI to mini display in stead of display to mini dosplay.

Can anyone explain why, and what I can do to make this work?

A standard Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter will connect a HDMI display to a computer;s Mini DisplayPort. It is not reversible. It will not work to connect a Mini DisplayPort display (or iMac in Target Display Mode) to a computer's HDMI port.

There are HDMI to Mini DisplayPort converters but they will give only resolution with a27" display.
