Photos for MacThey are likely there, I would recommend spending a little time learning how to use the Photos app. Also assuming you backup at least daily your information is not lost. Finally, if you have additional questions or problems with the Photos app there is a forum dedicated to that app. The quick link to it is Photos for Mac

Photos for MacHappy to help, assuming the albums you originally had the photos in were in either iPhoto or Aperture they likely came over. I know mine sure did!

Have the missing albums been Smart Albums? Not all smart albums can be recreated in Photos, for example, if the smart rule referred to events, since Photos has no events, only albums.
If your Albums section is completely empty in the Sidebar, you may need to reveal your albums. There is a hidden Show/Hide control to the right of the title "Albums". Hover the pointer there to reveal this control.
If none of this applies, you may need to repair your Photos library.
- To repair hold down the alt/option and the command key simultaneously while double clicking the iPhoto Library to launch the Photos Library First aid tools. Hold down both keys firmly and long enough, until the First Aid panel will appear.
- The select "Repair".
But make a current backup of your Photos Library before you try this.

Apr 20, 2015 3:13 PM in response to léonieby Georgereverse,Thanks! I just returned from Paris and need to recover from a jetlag before I use all suggestions. Fortunately the pictures are preserved. Indeed there were smart albums and none appeared in the new app "pictures"

Photos for MacTotally empathetic to your jetlag, take some time to fully recover before taking on Photos.

Apr 21, 2015 5:55 PM in response to Georgereverseby Georgereverse,Thanks for all suggestions. I recovered from jet lag but my problems with photos persist. All pictures from the trip, including the albums found they way to iMovies instead Photos. I can see them, play slideshow but not to copy or transfer somewhere else. Any idea how to transfer them to Photos?
