If it's a 3rd generation apple TV you need to plug in the micro USB and the power cord into the Apple TV. Then you should see the prompt on your iMac
To add to above, the steps need to be followed exactly (disconnect all cables, connect micro USB, if using a 3rd gen reconnect power). Connect directly to computer. Try a different cable
I used (tested) 2 different USB cables and plugged the appleTV into my Macbook Pro. The TV icon still never appears. So if you rule out having 2 faulty cables, whats left to test?
Where did you get the cables? If they are only meant for charging, and not able to transmit data, it won't work. If they were bundled with another device they are probably designed to only work with that device. Try another or take to Apple to have them restore
just to be sure then you do know that connecting it by usb 's only purspose is to salvage a failed firmware with a working one
you can do any type of play sync or the likes using the usb
