raw photos and jpg in photos

Hi I recently switched to the brand new Photos app, now I found my first major problem. I usually shoot in RAW and Jpeg on my camera, when I import these to the photos app I get an icon with a J (believe this tells me there is the raw and jpg file) but when i trie to get Photos to show the RAW file this option is not available. Anyone having similar problems?

I had the same problem and there is a solution.

You need to open the image in Edit mode and then right-click or pull down the Image menu. There you will see the "use RAW as original" option. So far, it seems that Apple has decided that this shouldn't be a global option (even though it was in Aperture) so we're stuck with a clumsy and unintuitive option that doesn't 'just work'. It's a shame, because I've been otherwise impressed with the Photos app.

As for @LarryHN's suggestion, that isn't an option for some of us. I often shoot B&W, if I want to preview in camera, I need the B&W jpg produced in camera. However, I will do final processing on my Mac and for that I will use the original RAW file. So, thanks for your concern, but I am not complicating my life for no reason. However, Apple most definitely is with this photographer unfriendly mess.

On migrating a library from iPhoto or Aperture, Photos brings the RAW file to the fore but when importing from an external source, the reverse occurs such that the jpg file is in front. This seems bizarre to me and unfortunately, as the app stands, switching to one or the other format seems only possible on a photo by photo basis. To do so, select a photo in an album, go to Edit mode, right click on the view, or two finger tap on the trackpad, to bring up the contextual menu where you'll see "Use jpeg/RAW as original" and switch to the format of your choice. Hopefully in a future upgrade, a batch change command will be made available to switch all views in any one album.
