.pkg installers open as TextEdit on imac

Trying to install some updates for apps but the .pkg opens up with TextEdit and just shows code. When I right click and try and change what it opens with I can't chose installer as its not there in ultilities? I have an imac OSX 10.9.5 3.2ghz Intel core i5.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
